Who was nice enough to show us around: Marion and Norm.
I met Marion at her yard sale a few months ago and we started chatting it up about awesome furniture. Fortunately for me, Marion was nice enough to invite me into her wonderful home and agreed to let me share it with you.
What they told us about their home: It is a 2 bedroom/ 1 bath 1200 sq ft home. When they purchased the home it was brown with brown carpet. They have spent the last 12 years bringing it back to its original beauty and they’ve definitely done a wonderful job.
Where is the home located: Woodlake, Sacramento, California
When was the home built and when they moved in: Built in 1941, moved in 1999.
Why they chose this home: It was the first house they looked at and it was a “rental disaster”. They saw the potential and it was in their price range, so they went for it. I’m glad they did, too. It is so darling!

What attracted you to MCM design?
I like old timey things! Especially simple unfettered designs with clean lines, a philosophy that MCM design champions.
Favorite designers and biggest influences for your style?
Hhhm… architects and furniture desingers like Mies van der Rohe, Gio Ponti, Richard Neutra, and Florence Knoll’s group of designers. Also industrial designers in ceramics like Russel Wright and Eva Zeisel. Legendary car designers Pininfarina and Pietro Frua. The guy who invented Helvetica…thank you for that!
How do you feel about reproductions?
Some licensed reproductions are okay but the cheapy stuff needs to go.
Furniture wise, what do you think is something you should invest in?
I would pick the favorite place in your house or yard and buy something really inspiring for that space. Something you will use and/or see all the time and that makes you happy. I love my Bertoia chairs and get to use them and stare at them on a daily basis.
Where are your favorite places to shop for home décor?
Flea markets are great resources. Estate sales and antique malls can be fun adventures too. There are a lot of locally owned shops here in town like Lumens that carry good design.
What are some of your best finds? From where?
The 1960s oil painting in our dining room came from my father-in-laws house. No one else wanted it, they thought it was too “crazy”. Their loss is my gain.
Greatest achievement in your home? Biggest challenge?
Having the hardwood floors refinished was the biggest triumph for me, but keeping them pristine is the biggest challenge.
Future goals/ projects?
Just to keep looking for great finds, and continue to educate myself on MCM design.
Do you have any home inspiration recommendations for our readers?
If you like easy, informal living then MCM is for you. Purchase things that you like, surround yourself with simple treasures. Let your friends and neighbors know about your secret passion and they could be great resources for uncovering finds.
Thanks so much to Marion and Norm for sharing their lovely home with Mimomito and our readers. :)
