Happy Campers: My kitchen cabinet and Eames chair!

28 Nov

Spotted this sucker on Craigslist for $50.00 and had to swoop. I had been looking for this exact cabinet style – clean white to go in the kitchen, 1950’s, metal banding, formica top – to replace a a crappy, laminate wood credenza we found in an abandoned warehouse. Not tryin’ to live that shabby chic life, guys. So it had to go.

Also scored this Herman Miller Eames Aluminum Group Chair from a garage sale in Natomas for $70.00. A little more than I would have liked to spend, but this is a must-have for someone who loves to troll the internet as hard as I do. (Next to it is a less-comfortable black task chair from 16th Street Salvation Army for $3.00.)

Florence Knoll: “I am not a decorator.”

13 Jan

I’ve started to wonder a little bit about the Knoll company after I realized I can not spell, nor pronounce, Eero Saarinen’s name. After a little research (wiki and Knolls website -WOKA, WOKA!!) I found I didn’t know anything about this dynamic company. Pictured above is Hans Knoll and his wife Florence. Hans started his furniture company under his name in 1938. Whilst this was happening, his future wife Florence was busy studying at Kingsfield, Cranbrook, and the Armour Institute where she received a degree in Architecture. She was a protegee of Eero Saarinen, and worked with big timer Bauhaus gents like Walter Gropius, Marcel Breur, and Wallace K. Harrison.
In an effort to bring in business during the war, Florence proposed to Hans that they work with architects by doing interior design. It was successful and the two married in 1946 and became full partners in the business. In 1955 Hans Knoll died in a car accident leaving Florence the President of the company until 1960. She remained the director of design until 1965. Florence contributed tons to the company by bringing in designers and big name clients. She also designed furniture for the company, helped with many of their textiles, and designed a lot of interiors and showrooms for Knoll.

Florence Knoll is most noted for some of the interiors she worked on when she ran the Knoll Planning Unit.

In 2002 Florence was awarded the National Medal of arts – CUZ SHE HELLA EARNED IT.

Craigslist: File cabinets 10$-Placerville

24 Oct

I had a really bad wedding dress experience from a store in Placerville. It left such a horrible taste in my mouth that I hesitated when Toni asked me if I wanted to go to Placerville next thrifting excursion I shuddered. One bad experience though shouldn’t fault all Placervillians. There was an antique store there that sold me an antique ring for like ten bucks because she found out I was getting hitched. Then another dealer from the same store gave me jars and napkin rings for a flat rate of 6 bucks (she had also just saved a pet bird from being ran over by a car-HERO).
Anyways I am really into old office crap being used for today’s furniture (we have a huge metal tanker in our house). I am thinking about checking these guys out and then using them to make a desk. Or just to have awesome storage utensil.

Craigslist: Steelcase Couch and Chair set, Oakland

6 Sep

OH HEY DUDES. Do you like sitting on ice blocks in the winter time? How about getting stuck to your furniture in the summer and having swamp-ass? Then check these stone cold foxes.

(Original Post) Three Steelcase pieces from 1974: a three-cushion sofa, matching side chair, and coordinating adjustable desk chair. The lines are crisp and tailored, the scale small enough to work in moderate-size rooms, but big enough to stretch out in. All three are upholstered in original tangerine vinyl in good condition, with matte-finish metal frames on the sofa and side chair. The office chair has a back frame powder-coated in sage green, and a swivel base in shiny chrome, on casters.

Sofa: $495
Side chair: $295
Office chair: $145

I’m surprised to hear that this is original vinyl, and that they are all in such crisp condition. If I had the cash I’d buy this suckers straight up, they match with a Steelcase office chair we recently picked up from Craigslist for$75.00. Here you see my boyfriend demonstrating it’s ability to “max” and “relax.”
