Around town: Thrifting in Modesto

29 Dec

Sorry this post has gotten to you so late. I am that last minute christmas shopper er maker…I’ve been spending the past two weeks with my husband making and wrapping christmas gifts:

We made pillows. Alright alright. Back to thrifting. So I’ll admit that a lot of the adventures in thrifting are determined by craigslist listings. I’ve seen some sweet stuff for cheap in modesto the past month or so so I figure we should go check it out. See what thrifting is like. This weekend me and my husband also went to Salinas to visit his folks for the holidays. We spent this monday in that bay thrifting. So I’ll be posting two thrifting adventures for this week :] Some of the thrift stores dont have reviews on the interwebs so heres a listing of some in Modesto.

Started off at the goodwill.

Craigslist: Buffet 125.00- West Sacramento

10 Dec

Seller:

“Hello all. I just refinished this buffet. It was blond and the finish was flaking off. I used a satin finish and here it is. This would really look cool with a flatscreen ontop. Size: 80 inches wide 11.5 inches deep 28 inches tall”

It’s pieces like this that get me interested in what Midmod enthusiasts think about colors and thee combination of them in their home. Mid century pieces can have some really awesome natural color in their wood-and I am interested in what colors people put in their homes to work with that. For awhile now I’ve been kinda glooming over how little individual pops of color there is in my place. It almost feels like there’s too much mad men office swag. I’ve been looking into ways to make things pop cohesively. We’re at the tail end of our home decor adventure, alls left now is to put up some pictures and my husband’s set of Vinyl toys. I am hoping that’ll bring some cheer in there. Basically what I am getting to is…help a sista out yo ;]! If you got a place that you want to share that is bouncing with color how bout sending that our way so’s us color deficients can get some pointers. Thank ya thank ya :D

Original post

I’ll admit that I am not too sure what this thing is…the seller’s posts states that you could hang it up in your garage, so it must be like something that greasy men (who are also into midcentury things) would be stoked on. It is being sold for 40.00 in Chico.

Craigslist: Clock 45.00: Martinez

29 Nov

I like this guy’s numbers, and hands (that little sun and moon!). The colors look nice enough but not too distracting that they would be able to be very cohesive to someone’s home.

“or sale is a square wood and tile wall clock from the 60’s- Measures 16″ square and 3” deep.
Very cool numbers and hands. Keeps great time- and a record of all the batteries replaced since 1962
are listed on the back (about every 8 years.) The condition is excellent, and the tiles are black, beige and cream.
The numbers, dots, and hands are brass. “

Craigslist: Christmas cheer sewing machine 50.00 – Sacramento.

29 Nov

I have an appreciation for Sewing machines and old projectors. I never know what I can do with any of them but I really dig the way they look. I could justify bringing home tons of great looking sewing machines like the one above to my husband (someone I know knows how to sew!) but I haven’t found much use out of projectors for the modern person today. Still brainstorming that one. Pick this guy up for a crafty loved one (IT’S THE HOLIDAYS, YAY) or for yourself. Original post

Oh here’s one more with an adorable table:

It is being sold for 50.00 in Natomas.
